BODHI PANYA INSTITUTE

TEMPORARY ONLINE INSTRUCTION – 500 HOUR TRADITIONAL THAI MASSAGE PROGRAM

Due to Covid-19 rules in California, Bodhi Panya Institute (“BPI”) is temporarily conducting all classes online.

Welcome, New Students!

All prospective new students are welcome to sit-in on one or more online classes prior to enrollment for students to decide if they can benefit from online education and for BPI to determine if the potential student is capable of succeeding in an online learning environment.

When will in-person classes resume?

We will resume in-class instruction when allowed by the California Massage Therapy Council (“CAMTC”), the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (“BPPE”) and the County of San Francisco.

Which classes will be taught online?

The California Massage Therapy Council (“CAMTC”) has adopted a Temporary Policy to Accept Interactive Distance Learning Hours.

This policy permits a massage school to provide both lecture-based and hands-on massage classes through distance learning (Zoom or comparable online platform) on a temporary basis until the State of California and County of San Francisco allow in-person massage classes.

While all hands-on massage classes can temporarily be taught online, at BPI a minimum of 110 hours of hands-on instruction must be done in-person under the active and direct supervision of an instructor.

Following is a list of courses and number of hours to be taught online (lecture and hands-on)

*Hands-on massage hours, the student must have a model or partner (someone to practice with).

*Hands-on massage hours, the student must have a model or partner (someone to practice with).

How will online classes be taught?

We will provide online instruction for lecture-based and hands-on massage classes on Zoom.  Every student must have a Zoom account and have both audio and video enabled for the entire class.

The schedule of online Zoom classes is available to students in advance and follows the schedule we would use for in-person classes as closely as possible.  All online classes are held via Zoom in “real time.”  Hours for Zoom classes are the same as if they were held in-person.  The instructor and students log in to Zoom at the beginning of each class and attendance is checked by the instructor.  The classes are recorded and students can review any class for further study, but credit for an online class will be given only for students who attend the “live” class on Zoom.  See “policies and procedures for hands-on massage classes” below” for special rules that apply for hands-on massage classes.

Attendance and participation?

To sign in Zoom class, students must sign up for a Zoom (free) account using your name, last name, and email as you register with BPI, so that your name appears on Zoom just as it would appear on a sign-in sheet for in-person classes. Please make sure your audio and video work prior to logging into a class.   When you enter a Zoom class, the instructor will want to see your face on Zoom, so please enable the video feature prior to the start of class.

You must participate in the Zoom class just as if you were sitting in class at our facility.

To receive credit, you must be online when the class starts and throughout the entire class.  The instructor must be able to see your face on Zoom for the entire class.  You cannot just participate by audio only or put a picture of your pet cat or dog on Zoom when in class – we all want to see your face and most importantly  you are present and attentive!

You must attend online classes when they are being conducted “live” on Zoom.   Videos of each class will be available a week after the class for you to review and refresh your knowledge – but you will only receive credit if you participate in the “live” class on Zoom.  You will not receive  credit if you only view the recorded video of a class.

All students must be present on Zoom for the entire class to receive credit for the class.

The instructor will verify the identity of each student in the class and record student attendance for each class on a daily basis.

The instructor must be able to see and hear the student on Zoom for the entire class for the student to receive class credit.  Students cannot participate in Zoom by audio only and they cannot post a picture on Zoom – they must have Zoom enabled so the instructor can see them in real-time.

Who will be teaching the online classes?

There will be no changes to our existing faculty.  Current instructors will teach courses online that they would otherwise be teaching in-person.

What about other learning resources? Video of Classes?

BPI has an e-Library where students can access all documents used in online classes and can also review recorded versions of all online classes.

All online classes will be recorded and available to students within one week after the class.  After a student participates in the live Zoom class, he or she can review a recorded version of the class online at any time to review the material presented in the class.

Recording Zoom classes?

All Zoom classes will be recorded and available online for students to review.  Students are not permitted to individually record (audio and/or video) any BPI online class.

How will students be evaluated?

Student skills and performance will be assessed by the instructor throughout each  class.  The instructor will provide each student with a written evaluation within ten days after the last class in each course.

Feedback and communication with instructors?

The instructor and students will be participating in live classes via Zoom and feedback is given by the instructor as it would be in an in-person class.

Instructors are available by telephone, email, and text message to communicate with students outside of lecture hours.

BPI will be sending each student an Interactive Distance Learning  survey for them to provide feedback about the online learning experience at the school.

What if online learning is not adequate for a student?

If a student feels that online learning is not the best environment for them, they can request a leave of absence and resume classes when BPI is permitted to have classes in-person.

Also, any student participating in online classes will be permitted to retake any of the online classes when in-person teaching resumes, free of charge, if the student fails to successfully complete any or all of the online course hours, fails appropriate skills assessments by an instructor or if the student requests it.

Is help available if students have technical issues with the Zoom classes?

Yes, an administrative person from BPI sits in on each class to deal with any technical issues that may arise.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES FOR HANDS-ON MASSAGE CLASSES

In addition to the procedures listed above that apply to all online classes (lecture-based and demonstration), the following policies and procedure apply to hands-on massage classes.

Participation on Zoom

In addition to the general requirements for Zoom participation, students must sign up for a free Zoom account so your name and last name will appear on screen. For all hands-on massage classes students must adjust their video so that the instructor can see their entire body and the body of the massage recipient on video, so that the instructor can evaluate their massage technique and provide feedback.

Limit on class size

CAMTC requires that no more than 18 practicing students can participate in a hands-on massage class with 1 instructor.  BPI will schedule all hands-on massage classes to meet this requirement.

Student participation in hands-on massage classes

For every hands-on massage class, the student must have a model to practice on during class – this can be a friend, relative, or student partner (your classmate in the same class).  The student must have someone to practice on for the entire class. If a student attends the class without a model or student partner for all or part of the class, the student will not receive credit for those class hours. Note: if a student partners with a classmate in the same class, the student can alternate massage practice with that student partner and receive credit for the full number of class hours attended.  But  if the student partners with someone who is not a student in the same class the student cannot trade massage with that partner and must practice massage for the entire class to receive credit for those class hours.

Equipment

Each student participating in a hands-on massage class must have the proper tools and equipment to effectively participate and demonstrate the massage techniques being taught.

That means, a massage table for classes that involve table work and a massage mat for classes that involve massage on a mat.

In addition, the student must have massage oils, towels, draping linen, etc. to participate in a class that involves those tools.

BPI can provide the appropriate equipment to a student participating in a hands-on massage class upon payment of a $50 deposit.  All equipment must be returned to BPI  within 2 days after the final class.

Safety and Covid-19 Precautions

Students must observe all proper safety measures when participating in hands-on massage classes.

This includes:

  • the health status of both the student and the massage recipient must be checked prior to each hands-on massage class

  • a student or massage recipient who has a fever, shows any other symptoms of covid-19, has tested positive for covid-19 or has been exposed to anyone who has tested positive for covid-19 may not participate in a hands-on massage class

  • the area where the student will participate in the hands-on class must be set up to maintain effective social distancing (at least 6 feet) from other people, aside from the massage recipient

  • the student must sanitize the massage table or mat, other items used during the massage and other areas where the student or massage recipient may have contact prior to each class

  • both the student and the massage recipient must wash their hands and wear a face mask for the entire hands-on class

  • An online client in-take form must be completed by a massage recipient before each massage session.
